VOMP Usage Notes
Usage Notes

These notes are intended to get across all the little things you might want to know but might not automatically find out just by trying things or exploring. I will add to them as I think of more things that aren't obvious.

Remote Control Buttons

In the channels, radio stations and recordings menu there are some symbols at the bottom left. These indicate the buttons you can use - up and down arrows are obvious, forward skip and backward skip move the menu by one page up and down. You can press the OK button on a channel or recording to get the menu, but you can also press the play button to directly start playing.

The "back/exit" button will always go back a menu level / exit a channel or recording.

On the main menu the number keys can also be used to select an option.

Whilst watching a recording the following buttons can be used:
0-9: The number keys will move you to 10s of percent through the recording. So 0 for 0% (the start), 5 for 50%, etc.

Red: Programme summary
Green: Select audio channel
Yellow: Skip backwards by approximately 10 seconds
Blue: Skip forwards by approximately 10 seconds
Skip backwards: Skip backwards by approximately a minute
Skip forwards: Skip forwards by approximately a minute

When in Live TV the Guide and Red buttons will take you to the EPG. Number buttons can be used to type in a channel number to go to.

Configuration Options

Remote control type: New or old. Old style remotes have the green power button at the top left, new style have it at top right. New style remotes have more buttons and this will be used where appropriate in the software at some point, old style remotes only have one set of arrow keys for up/down/left/right and ch+/ch-/vol+/vol- whereas there are seperate buttons for these functions on the new remotes. The option alters the way the arrow buttons are interpreted to suit. If you get stuck with the wrong remote and your arrow buttons don't work, press back until you get to the welcome screen, press the number key for "options" and then press ok. That will switch the remote type.

TV connection type: RGB+composite or S-Video. For European MVPs this will determine whether the SCART connector outputs RGB and composite video simultaneously, or S-Video. Colours will be incorrect if this setting is wrong. I can only guess what this means for non-European MVPs.

16:9 on 4:3 display mode: If you have a 4:3 TV and you play a 16:9 video, what should happen to the picture? Chop off the sides and only display the vertical middle of the picture, or put black bars on the top and bottom and display all the 16:9 picture in the middle of the screen.

Power state after bootup: On, Off or Last State. Fairly self explanatory I hope. I put this in for when power is applied to a whole circuit for example but you don't want to use the MVP.

Display channels: This should be left on "All" unless you use encrypted TV channels with VDR and you want to filter them out of the list.

VDR-Pri: This controls the priority level VOMP will use when requesting live TV channels from VDR. If you use a value of 0 then VOMP will only get a TV channel if it would not interfere with a recording or another playback device. If you use a higher priority you risk cancelling recordings or stopping other playback devices. Currently VDR might crash if this is done. Leave at 0 unless you know what you are doing!

Power Control

The power button on the remote control should always toggle the state of the software between on and standby. It is the same as the "Stand by" option on the main menu. As far as I am aware there is no power saving benefit to using this standby feature, but it will have the following effects: It turns off the video signal to the TV - this will allow the TV to listen to other signals, it turns off the LED on the front of the MVP, and it disconnects from VDR. This can be useful if you restart VDR - you need only go to standby and back on the MVP.

Multiple VDR servers

Personally I have two VDR servers - one for using to watch TV and recordings and one to develop this software with. I don't know why other people would have multiple VDR servers, but if you do then the MVP will present you with a list of IP addresses to choose which to log in to when you either turn it on or bring it out of standby.
